Movie Review: Blue Beetle by Marlon McCaulsky

🐞 NON SPOILER REVIEW OF BLUE BEETLE 🐞
Synopsis: Jaime Reyes suddenly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology called the Scarab. When the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he's bestowed with an incredible suit of armor that's capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.
My thoughts: My expectations were not that high so I just went in looking for a good time. For the most part this film delivered. Typical superhero origin tropes. Kinda typical villain motivation when they discover a alien power source and try and use it for there Diabolic ends.
I really enjoyed the interaction between Jaime and his family. Seeing genuine Mexican family culture was great on screen. Once Jaime gets the Scarab hijinks occur. Although the focus on the family was a little too much.
There were a few plot holes that distracted from the storyline and some very corny dialogue were sprinkle throughout. I know this film was originally intended for HBO Max so maybe that's why the script was as good as it could be. I think there was a lot of potential in this film that wasn't fulfilled. I hate to compare films but if they (the director & screenplay writers) used Spider-Man Into the Spider-verse as reference this could've been a much better film. They could've explored the alien origins of the Scarab and the bigger threat coming but they didn't. A missed opportunity.
The action scenes were great and I enjoyed it. This is a good film but with the state of DCEU being what it is I don't expect this franchise to go much further.
It's worth checking out if you're interested.
